Winter 1997Vol.11 No.1
The Sky Is Falling
I never thought I'd see the day. I know, I know, you said the same thing when you frequented the fifth floor. But "that day" has come.
Last year, it was an elevator. Now...walls are being removed, doors are being replaced and widened, shelving is being built, and there will be - the by end of the process - more SPACE than ever on the fifth floor of Memorial Hall.
These changes are both aesthetic and functional.
See the before and after plans to get an overview. Specifically, our news booth will double in size. This will make room for the Live in the Lobby show, many guests fir the news and talk shows, as well as new professional sound proofing. Our control room will be longer, with built-in cabinetry for albums and compact discs. Our equipment will rest on built in shelving, customized for our needs. The original station lobby will regain the use of its beautiful glass ceiling, frosted for temperature control. The old Pandora darkroom will house thousands of CDs and LPs on customized shelves.
Our huge Music Department office has been created out of one of the corners of the station. This new room is almost completed and, trust me, it's a vision. Best of all...central heating and air conditioning!!! Goody-bye radiators, so long window units. Yippee!
Now, all of these renovations don't come cheap. After last year's fire in Brooks Hall, our renovations were "bumped". We're all surprised that this is actually happening now. Last summer we decided to donate $15,000 of our underwriting account to get the project started faster. Well, it worked.
And after the meetings with the architect, folks from the university's physical plant, decorators and the dynamic duo of Tommy Altman and Candy Sherman, it's happening.
