Ever wanted to DJ on WUOG? Now's your chance. For a $10 donation, you can take a 1 hour shift on 90.5fm. This year the money donated will go to The American Cancer Society.

Get behind the mic and spin whatever tunes you'd like for a good cause. Bring your own music or search through our archives. You can play cds, vinyl, or bring an ipod. There will be a WUOG dj in the booth to show you how to do everything.

Time for a WUOG throwdown! All of you wonderful staffers are invited to come Wed, November 28th to Little Kings at 8 PM. We'll have food and awards, followed by a dance party! This is a MONOCHROMATIC DANCE PARTY, which means everyone needs to dress entirely in one color. Our own Max Martin will be DJing, followed by WUOG Alum DJ Kurt Wood. Save the date, and a place in your heart, for WUOG!

The banquet (for staffers only) begins at 8, and the dance party (for anyone who wants to come) will begin around 9:30.

Saturday Afternoon, Memorial Hall Ballroom:

12:00-1:00pm: WUOG documentary/slideshow created by the WUOG news staff and externs from the UGA music business program.
1:00-2:00pm: Four of our founding alumni share the experiences from the very beginnings of WUOG.
2:00-2:30: break for lunch provided by the station.
2:30-3:00: State of the Station update by the current General Manager and introduction of the current Executive Board.
3:00-4:00: Various speakers including Jared Bailey, founder of Flagpole Magazine.

Saturday Evening, 40 Watt Club, FREE SHOW!: doors open 9pm, bands start at 10:30. WUOG hosts a blow-out bash including music from Bob Hay and the Jolly Beggarz/Squallz and Hope For Agoldensummer.

Sunday, 3pm, SLC #150, "Live From WUOG: Highlights of 35 Years of Broadcasting": Hosted by the UGA Library Archives Dept. the event will showcase recordings from our studios including selections by Pylon, Widespread Panic, Love Tractor, Flat Duo Jets, Little Tigers, and Robyn Hitchcock. Live at WUOG CD Release Party! September 20th, Little Kings

Our staff has been hard at work this past year booking, setting up, and producing bands to create our 4th release of live performances recorded in our studios. In addition to performances from "Live in the Lobby" it includes tracks from "Live Fast Rules" our live local metal show that is part of "Loud Fast Rules", "Crunk in the Lobby", our live hip-hop special which is put on by the DJs that host "The Halftime Hip Hop Show", as well as various non-local artists that have stopped by the station on tour from places such as North Carolina or even Sweden.

In order to celebrate we are having a release party, here are the details:

When: Thursday, September 20th, 9pm
Where: Little Kings Club, Downtown Athens
What: FREE show and everyone gets a FREE CD! Deaf Judges and Les Napoleones will be performing!

Allmusic.com describes their sound as "synth-laden experimental noise-pop that echoes 1980's shoegaze acts like the Jesus and Mary Chain." Awesome. Save Internet Radio!

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help! The Internet Radio Equality Act has recently been introduced in both the House ( H.R. 2060) and Senate (S. 1353) to save the Internet radio industry. Please call your senators and your representative to ask them to co-sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act by clicking the image on the left.

Former WUOGer hospitalized

Last Friday, Sam Lane, a former WUOG DJ, was critically injured when a car struck him as he was bicycling toward downtown. Now he is in stable condition in the ICU at Athens Regional Medical Center, and his family is here from Mississippi to be with him. He'll be in the hospital for several more months. WUOG and WPPP Hot 100.7 FM will be hosting a visit from the non-profit Prometheus Radio Project from Philadelphia. The Prometheus Radio Project is an advocacy group for low-power FM community radio stations, providing legal, technical, and organizational advice and counseling to communities interested in creating stations and those that already have them.

WUOG News Presents: HPV Special

On Monday, April 16th from 6-7pm, the WUOG 90.5FM News Team will be producing and broadcasting a special report discussing HPV, from the virus to the vaccine. Michelle Cohen, the sexual health coordinator at UGA, and Kimberly Parker, a professor from the Women's Studies department who studies Health Promotions and Behavior, will be on the air with WUOG to provide the public with the facts and knowledge they need to know about this virus and the recent vaccine. WUOG and the FCC

Some of you may remember that WUOG was taken off the air for about two and a half weeks in the spring of 2005 for not submitting our license renewal in time. Though our advisor at the time did fill out the proper paperwork online, she failed to hit a button that would save the information before sending. The FCC received a blank form instead of our application but did not notify WUOG until a year after our license had expired.

Up until now we had been operating under a temporary license, but we are pleased to announce that now we have been granted our full license by the FCC. They also have notified us that we may owe them a number of fines (about $7000) for failing to re-apply for our license, but we are in the process of appealing and working with the FCC to determine exactly what fines we are liable for.

Students, don't worry: these fines would not be paid with your activities fees money.

Timeline

November, 2003: WUOG advisor completes, but doesn't submit online license renewal form.
December 1, 2003: WUOG's application renewal due.
April 1, 2004: WUOG's license expires without the knowledge of WUOG or UGA officials. There was still no notification from the FCC.
March 17, 2005: The FCC informs WUOG that our license has expired and that we no longer have authority to broadcast. WUOG goes off-air.
March 30, 2005: WUOG requests a special temporary authorization (STA) to continue broadcasting pending consideration of their license renewal application.
April 5, 2005: The FCC grants WUOG the STA and the station returns to the airwaves with a temporary license.
January 31, 2007: The FCC finally grants WUOG our license renewal! The FCC also concludes that the station is liable for a monetary forfeiture in the amount of $7000 for failing to file our application renewal in 2003.
February 27, 2007: The FCC releases the notice of forfeiture to the public.
March 1, 2007: WUOG is working on an appeal to reduce the monetary charges.
